Marty Tankleff Joins Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco After Being Firm Client, Colleague… Now Special Counsel

Marc Howard Also Joins as Special Counsel; Both to Consult on Wrongful Conviction Cases from Around the Country

Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, LLP, a boutique criminal defense, appellate, personal injury and civil rights and commercial litigation firm with offices in New York City and on Long Island, is proud to announce that Martin H. Tankleff, the Georgetown University Peter P. Mullen Distinguished Visiting Professor, once their client and then colleague while he attended law school, will join the firm as Special Counsel.

Mr. Tankleff co-teaches Georgetown’s “Making an Exoneree” course with Marc M. Howard, Professor of Government and Law at Georgetown University and Director of the Prisons and Justice Initiative. Mr. Howard will also be Special Counsel to the firm. Both will consult on wrongful conviction cases from around the country.

“Marty’s story is well known. He is a lawyer and distinguished professor at Georgetown University, who was wrongly convicted of a horrible crime at a young age. And now, 14 years after his release, he is coming back to the firm that helped him find justice, to work for others who are suffering as he once did,” Bruce Barket, Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, LLP founding partner, said. “Our Post-Conviction and Appellate Practice recently secured the largest award in New York State history for a man who spent more than 25 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Having Marty and Marc join our team ensures that we can provide among the most outstanding representation to anyone charged with or falsely convicted of a crime in this country.”

Barry Scheck, co-founder of the Innocence Project, said, “Marty is a remarkably resilient and courageous individual. Bruce Barket and his firm played an important part in his exoneration, and they gave him his first legal job. And now that he has graduated law school and created the amazing 'Making an Exoneree' program with Marc Howard at Georgetown, I can't think of a better place for Marty to return and practice law."

Hon. Barry Kamins (Ret.), Partner, Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins PC, said, “I represented Marty in the admission process before the Character and Fitness Committee. I probably learned more from him than he did from me in that process, because I've never met someone with such a unique outlook on life. He had gone through such adversity and yet was still optimistic about the future and how he could help people. I was very happy to be part of his admission process, because it taught me how positive human beings can be."

Hon. Gabriel Krausman (Ret.), said, "Marty has proven that you can come back from the depths of despair and remake a life after a devastating, destructive occurrence. It is a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit. Marty has proven to be a resourceful and caring person who has decided to give back to society by helping others who have been wrongfully convicted. He has always been a champion for the underdog, and it is amazing that he never lost hope and turned around his life in terms of where he was and where he is today. His story is a case study in resilience. I wish him well in this new endeavor."

Stephen L. Braga, Chair, Government Enforcement & Investigations Section, Bracewell LLP, said,

“It is truly wonderful news to learn that Marty Tankleff and Marc Howard are becoming affiliated with the firm of Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco LLP. Wonderful for Marty and Marc. Wonderful for the firm. But most of all, wonderful for the firm’s clients.”

"Marty’s amazing personal journey puts him in a small and special category of lawyers who can honestly say that they know exactly what the client is going through in his or her odyssey through the criminal justice system,” Mr. Braga continued. “As a result, Marty also knows exactly what the client needs to prevail on the roller coaster ride of battling the Government. What it requires most is a tenacious defender, with solid legal skills, who ‘never gives up.’ Marty is that defender. He is a junkyard dog, ready for any fight.”
