We are pleased to announce that Partner Seymour James has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Criminal Law and Procedure by Hon. Joseph A. Zayas, Chief Administrative Judge of the New York State Unified Court System.
The CPL Committee is a standing body within the Office of Court Administration that annually recommends legislative proposals and policy improvements on criminal law and procedure to the Chief Judge and Chief Administrative Judge. Its members include sitting and retired judges, prosecutors, indigent defense providers, and members of the private bar who collectively bring hundreds of years of experience in New York's criminal justice system to the work of shaping how the state's courts operate.
The appointment is a natural fit. Seymour brings more than 40 years of criminal defense experience to the Committee, with a career that has taken him from staff attorney to Attorney-in-Chief of The Legal Aid Society, where he oversaw the organization's Criminal, Civil, and Juvenile Rights practices. He is a Past President of both the New York State Bar Association and the Queens County Bar Association, currently serves on the American Bar Association's Board of Governors, and has served on numerous state and city commissions and committees focused on criminal justice, sentencing, and court reform.
We congratulate Seymour on this appointment and look forward to the contributions he will make to the Committee's work.
